Animals which are killed or smuggled from Assam in lieu of hefty sum of money range from biggies like tigers to tokay geckos which are much smaller in size. Now, the latest name that has been added to that list is ‘Channa Barca’ a rare species of fish which is being eyed by the animal traders for the big money it attracts in the market. However, an operation carried out by Darrang police under the leadership of Silbori OC Jibon Daimary in Silbori resulted in the arrest of two people namely Khairul Islam and Inamul Islam who were trying to sell eight rare Channa Barca fish.
In investigation, it has come out that one Channa Barca fish is sold for around Rs 7,000 in the local market and so the entire consignment of fish which was captured cost more than Rs 50,000. These fishes are found in the water bodies and ponds in the vicinity of Oranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. In Guwahati, their price increases to Rs 8-9000 and even more in the international markets. A lot of new facts regarding the trading of this fish is supposed to come out in the ensuing investigation.
