To showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Tiwas, The Tiwa Kanthijuri Sal Society is organizing the 5th Tiwa folk cultural festival at ‘Sograsal’ on the Sonaikuchi Hill near Jagiroad in Morigaon district. The two day cultural festival will start at 9 am on 17th March, informed Nadiram Deuri. Exhibitions and cultural functions are packed for the two days.
Nishikanta Sarma, Superintendent, Morigaon district Handloom and Textile Department, will inaugurate the exhibition to be organized on the occasion at 10 am soon after the Tiwa flag is hoisted. Deba Prasad Mishra, Director, Cultural Affairs Department, Assam will inaugurate a folk cultural function at 1 pm State Handloom. Textile Minister Ranjeet Datta, MLAs from Morigaon, Jagiroad, Diphu and Hawraghat will also attend the felicitation and prize distribution meeting.
Swapnanil Baruah, former commissioner of Industries and Commerce Department, Government of Assam will inaugurate a folk cultural programme which is at 11am on the concluding day of the festival. The penultimate folk cultural evening will be inaugurated by the principal of Sur-Deol Sangeet Mahavidyalay, Jagiroad Dr Paban Chandra Gogoi in which TAC EMs Khagen Chandra Bordoloi and Boluram Bordoloi will be present.
The rich cultural heritage of the Tiwas inhabiting Assam and Meghalaya has so far remained secluded from general public largely due to the lack of opportunities and avenues of preservation, sustenance and display.
