Born and brought up in Guwahati, Monjyoti is a musician, entrepreneur, trainer and a student of stoicism/psychology. After completing his schooling at KV IOC, Noonmati, he moved out to pursue computer science from NIT Rourkela. He was working as Lead Engineer in Samsung India Software Operations, but like most driven achievers, he wanted to carve out his own path. He left his ‘stable’ job and started a software venture with his best friend Sarvoday, who he met in college. ‘The start-up environment wasn’t what it is like today, and so, it took us about 2.5 years to finally get a grip on the new space.’
Around the same time, he started exploring the live music scene Bangalore. ‘I started doing shows on and off. The music scene slowly started picking up, and I realized I could make a career in music. I gradually shifted from the tech space to the music space, and as the music picked up, I eased the pressure from the tech side by leaving the web projects in the hands of the techies I started to pick projects and worked on them at my own pace.’ He has performed 500+ live shows across the country as well as in seven countries of Southeast Asia (including collaborations with Deepika Padukone’s foundation, Bollywood musician Papu Gogoi, Prodigy violist Dr Aneesh Vidyashankar and more). He is currently based out of New York.
To say that his music career picked up would be an understatement as his music profile hit Global Rank 1 in the American Musical Platform for 6 weeks, starting July 13, 2018. The track ‘Hypnosis’ that really appealed to listeners worldwide was made with the help of music producer Papu Gogoi. ‘Papu da and I were very optimistic about the song, and we wanted to go beyond conventional musical norms and give it a ‘out of the world’ flavour. The basic idea was to make it naturally creative, free flowing and boundless, while attempting to harmoniously combine a wide range of musical flavours into one single flow. Papu da told me, in the beginning, that this song had great potential and it is at par with global experimental standards, but with thousands of musicians across the globe putting out great music every day, I didn’t expect it to hit global charts so soon.’ The song can be streamed and downloaded at monjyoti.com/mymusic. The second song of the album called ‘Neighbor Syndrome’ has also been released.
Monjyoti has not only been able to find success in his own music career but he also founded Mysticjolt to help other aspiring musicians. It is a personalised and goal oriented music learning platform, in Bangalore, that has worked with and mentored 400+ musicians and students so far.
More Than Music
But the achiever is not only limited to his tech knowledge and music skills, he is also a record holder of diamond push-ups. ‘This was more of an accident. I started doing push-ups few years back and was doing it consistently, mainly to centre my mind and emotions, as the day to day challenges were quite stressful back then. There was no thought of attempting to break any record. Since I was doing it so consistently, over a period of time, I could do 80-90 or even 100 push-ups at a stretch. I used to push myself physically, because the physical stretch used to have a corresponding psychological shift and it acted as an amazing stress buster. Sometime in 2018, I randomly came across a push-up record and I saw that the world record for diamond push-up is about 72/min. I decided to give it a shot and called up a trainer friend of mine, Ashwin Joseph, to train me for a couple of weeks. I attempted the record and ended up doing 78 diamond push-ups in a min. It is a record in Asia Book Of Records, India Book Of Records, World Records India and Assam Book Of Records.’
In addition to that, he is also a certified trainer and speaker. ‘In this journey of self exploration, I became obsessed with the study of the human mind, human behaviour and spirituality, and I realized that this knowledge was fundamental to living a life of fulfilment and meaning. This enabled me to deconstruct and find answers to some of the bigger questions around human psychology, fulfilment, success, emotional intelligence, and I understood that worthwhile living was way beyond simply ticking of the items from the popular social checklist (study, job, salary, promotion, marriage, kids, retire). I started consuming material in these areas through books, podcasts and videos, and eventually ended up attending a program by my guru Tony Robbins (World’s Number 1 Life Coach and Business Strategist) in Singapore in 2018.’
The Road Ahead
Currently, he is working on the album titled ‘Hypnosis’. He also released a book titled A Relentless Pursuit of the Truth – A philosophical guidebook to living a life of fulfillment and meaning. ‘This book is my own journey captured from a psychological and philosophical standpoint, and I try to answer some of the big questions of life like “How to live a life of fulfilment and meaning?, Why we do what we do?, Why are so many successful people empty and miserable? How to deal with stress and emotional issues? How to deal with obstacles?” and more.’
