Recently Air India (AI 173) became the Indian airline to fly from Delhi to San-Francisco charting the North Polar route. The route was launched on 15th August. It was flagged off by Air India Chairman and Managing Director Ashwani Lohani. Among all the excited passengers who got to be a part of the historical voyage, was Bollywood star Vivek Oberoi, who shared his experience on social media.
Air India already has flights to the US from the Atlantic and Pacific routes as part of its endeavour to conserve fuel, cut travel time, improve aircraft utility and reduce carbon emissions. The fuel savings on the polar route are expected be in the region of 2 to 7 tons, depending on the wind conditions.
The flight AI-173 took off at 4am with about 243 passengers on board. It fly over Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Russia in addition to the North Pole and landed in San-Francisco at 6:32 am local time, 30 minutes before scheduled time.
