The move to update the NRC is a good idea. What is not are attempts at deriving political benefits out of the exercise. For example, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s recent statement that he would move the Centre to accept the latest voters list, meaning the 2014 electoral rolls, as the basis for inclusion of people’s names in the NRC, is clearly an afterthought, obviously keeping the 2016 Assembly polls in mind. What has been the Assam Congress doing all this while as the updating exercise was going on in accordance with the agreed modalities like the 1971 voters list and so on? I only hope crores of public money is not wasted and the exercise does not end up in a mega scam. For sure, if the issue goes to court, a verdict may not come soon and the 2016 polls could well have been over! Who knows, that could well be a strategy some people may want to try out.
