Madhya Bharati Power Project and Moshvaraya Infrastructure Limited situated at Duga in East Sikkim, has been allegedly affecting the lives of around 10 thousand people residing in that area by polluting the main drinking water source, the River Khani Khola.
Speaking to media, a resident of Majhitar said, ‘Due to overflow of debris from cement and construction works, the waters of the Khani Khola are getting polluted.’ He also said that after drinking polluted water, residents, specially children, are suffering different types of diseases. ‘Serious stomach and skin problem have become commonplace in this area,’ he shared.
Meanwhile, farmers of Khani Khola have claimed that the polluted water has severely affected crops as well and thus production has dropped down at least by 50%. It may be recalled that it is not the first time that these facts have come to light, as earlier also these companies were warned by the Sikkim government for pollution related matters which lead to public concern at the same place.
Meanwhile, Sikkim Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has formed a 16-member review committee under the chairmanship of Rangpo Nagar Panchayat president Maya Cintury.
