Majuli, the cultural epicentre of Assam, is all geared up to celebrate the Raas Mahotsav from Tuesday onwards. This elaborate festival is to begin with a convention at Dakhinpat Satra, followed by the raas puja and the dramatization of Lord Krishna’s famed Raas Leela at namghars and other venues. The festival is a four-day long affair, and is due to close on Friday.
A cultural troupe from Manipur has been invited by the historic Dakhinpat Satra. Assamese cine star Gayatri Mahanta, Pabitra Barua and various other artists are set to perform in the three-day long mahotsav. Apart from the celebrations, the famous Uttar Kamalabari Satra will also provide free food and lodging daily to all visitors coming to the satra premises for the duration of the festival.
The traditional art form of mask-making also has its own special place in the festival. Foreign tourists have descended on the island in droves to take part in the festivities.
