Witnessing continuous physical and mental harassment during the entry of the ongoing Sangai festival, transgenders in Manipur have urged the State Tourism Department to provide a separate entry gate at the event. While interacting with the media, Sandra Nandelbam, Brand Ambassador of Sana Ebemma said, ‘While visiting the on-going Sangai festival, we were continuously facing harassment as we stood in the queue for ladies’. Deployed security personnel sent them over to the other queue, abusing them meanwhile. She also contended that they faced issues while using public toilets meant for men.
Sandra further said, ‘In this regard, we urged the State Tourism Department to immediately make a separate entry line for us, also to provide a separate washroom, so that we can also freely enjoy the festival’. It is to be noted that civil society organisations had earlier approached the Chief Secretary of Manipur, Deputy Commissioner of Imphal, and the Superintendent of Police, to no avail.
