Ruling out all speculations regarding a pre-poll alliance, the All India United Democratic Font (AIUDF) Chief Badruddin Ajmal has stated that the party will never engage in any pre-poll alliance with the Congress.
While interacting with reporters, the AIUDF chief said, ‘There is no question of any alliance with Congress. If we join hands with the Congress, the Hindu votes will be polarized and that will benefit the BJP. We can’t allow this to happen.’
He further informed that he is working for a Bihar-like grand alliance (minus Congress) in Assam which may include AGP, Trinamool Congress, JD-U and a few minor regional parties to defeat both the BJP and Congress.
‘In the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, we are planning to field 70-80 candidates,’ he informed, adding, ‘There is a strong possibility of a ‘Third Front government’ coming to power in Dispur’. He further said, ‘In this regard, I will soon hold a meeting with JD-U President Sharad Yadav and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.’
Meanwhile, reacting to Ajmal’s statement, Vijay Gupta, General Secretary of State BJP told ENe, ‘Both Ajmal and Tarun Gogoi are frequently changing their versions regarding the alliance, which is vitiating the political atmosphere of the State.’ He also said that Ajmal and Gogoi have a strong understanding between themselves, despite what has been given out.
