The crucial Assam-Meghalaya border has become a hub for kidnappers and traffickers; this has come to light in the latest home department report of Assam. According to the report, ‘In 2015, a total of 187 cases of abduction have been recorded in Goalpara and South Salmara police districts alone.’
Speaking to ENe, a highly placed State Home department official said, ‘We have already asked neighbouring State Meghalaya to take proactive steps for curbing criminal activities along the interstate border’. She further said that recently a meeting was held between the civil and police forces of districts on either side of the Assam-Meghalaya border.
‘The safety of the general public, especially traders from Assam who frequently travel to Meghalaya has also been discussed,’ the official further added. It is to be mentioned here that Assam’s home department has also asked Assam Police to maintain a separate record of militancy-related incidents in Goalpara.
