Protesting against the failure of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s government in maintaining the law and order situation of the State, the Assam BJP unit took out a massive rally in Guwahati on Wednesday. Party workers from all parts of the State congregated at the Assam Veterinary Science College in Khanapara from where the rally took off.
While interacting with media, Guwahati MP Bijaya Chakrabarty said, ‘Assam Government has drastically failed in maintaining the law and order situation of the State.’ She also said that presently there is corruption in almost all sectors of the State.
Meanwhile, security forces deployed to bring the rally to a halt resorted to blank firing and firing tear gas shells at the Super Market area in Dispur. During the scuffle, former State Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and MP Ramen Deka were reportedly injured and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. BJP party in charge for the State Mahendra Singh, Jayanta Malla Baruah, former Nalbari MLA and ex-Congressman and other party workers were subsequently arrested.
Besides, Guwahati Police Commissioner Mukesh Agarwala and IGP (Law and Order) SN Singh have also sustained minor injuries. However, Parliamentary Secretary of the Home Affairs department Sushanta Borgohain stated that the protesters would be dealt with firm hands considering the situation.
It is to be mentioned here that BJP workers scheduled to take part in the protest were arrested in various parts of the State such as Hajo, Raha, Bilasipara and Mirza.
