The historical Langthabal Palace which was once listed under Manipur’s Ancient and Historical Monuments by the Government of Manipur no longer looks like a protected site; instead it has become a vast dumping ground.
‘It was a beautiful palace during the reign of Maharaja Gambhir Singh which was later renamed as Gambhir Singh Complex by the Manipur government,’ said Hijam Krishnapriya, a local resident, adding, ‘It is now littered with plastic bottles and polythene packets. What a shame!’ She further informed that the memorial house which symbolised the shrine of the king now lies forgotten. ‘Besides, the wooden bridge build over the Chandranadi river which is the only entrance to the site is likely to break at any point of time,’ she further pointed out.
It is to be mentioned here that the issue of continuous negligence of historic Langthabal palace have been raised by certain organisations, but the State government has failed to take any concrete step in this regard.
