A recent police operation against inter-state car-lifters proved to be fatal after a police official was killed in an encounter in remote Sungajan along the Golaghat- Karbi Anglong border. Binod Phangsu, officer-in-charge of Borpathar police station, was killed and constable Manoj Saikia injured during a gun-battle after a team of police personnel went on a raid against car-lifters.
Police informed that the gang of criminals fired upon a team of police personnel from Barpathar police station when the latter were on an operation to recover a stolen car. As per the intelligence report, a number of international car-lifters are operating in the region under the patronage of banned Nationalist Social Council of Nagaland (NSCN).
Meanwhile, additional Inspector General of Police Apurba Jeevan Barua arrived at Sungajan to take stock of the situation. Security forces have launched a manhunt against those criminals who are behind the incident.
