In a bid to connect every town in the Northeast to the National Highway, DoNER Ministry has come up with a new initiative titled- Northeast Road Sector Development Scheme (NERSDS).
Informing about the initiative, DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh said, ‘The initiative will primarily focus on inter-state roads as roads connecting one state to another in the Northeast are often found to be neglected.’
‘Due to its condition, inter-state roads of the Northeast are popularly known as ‘orphan-roads,’ he added.
He further revealed that five connecting roads: Daimukh-Harmuti Road in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, Tura-Mankachar Road in Assam, Assam portion of Sherkhan-Bagha Bazar Road, Wokha-Merapani-Golaghat Road in Nagaland and Assam, and Jamai-Taning Road in Manipur have been selected under the scheme.
The DoNER Minister also informed that he would soon write to the Union Finance Ministry seeking allocation of additional funds to kick start the North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP), which the Centre had suspended in December 2014.
