Poachers killed an adult female rhino in Kaziranga National Park on Tuesday and escaped with its horn – the first such incident reported in the New Year. The incident took place near Sitolmari anti-poaching camp in the Bagori forest range. Park authorities have said that the culprits entered from the side where the Brahmaputra enters the park in the early hours on Tuesday. Forest guards found two country boats tied to the river bank.
Five Person Group
‘We found two country boats tied to the bank. The boats were used by the goons to enter the park. From the footprints and circumstantial evidence available on the spot, it is clear that the group comprised five persons. They killed the rhino by .303 rifles,’ informed divisional forest officer (Kaziranga) S K Seal Sharma. He further disclosed that the incident took place on the outskirts of the park. Autopsy of the carcass would be conducted on Wednesday. A police operation is on-going though no arrests have been made so far.
