A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the whole Northeastern region in the wee hours of Monday, killing at least four people and injuring 100 others.
As per the Indian Meteorological department, ‘The epicentre was in Tamenglong district in Manipur, which is around 35km away from the state capital, i.e Imphal.’
Imphal suffered large scale damage; many houses have reported huge cracks and walls of numerous building have also collapsed.
Meanwhile, Manipur state government has already started rescue operation with the help of the Indian Army and paramilitary force. Two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams comprising of 90 personnel each have also been sent to Imphal.
Speaking to media, a state government official from Manipur informed, ‘Even though we have started operations but the rescue efforts are getting hampered because of severed power supplies and telecommunication links.’
As per the report, in the aftermath of the earthquake, 2 persons were killed and 16 others were injured in Guwahati as well. Tremors were also felt across the belt, including in the bordering regions of Myanmar, Bangladesh and Tibet.
