Working as a contractual faculty at AJKMCRC, Jamia Milia Islamia University, Thokchom Sony is an artist and illustrator based in Delhi. His love for art began at the tender age of three, when he loved drawing people, animal and flowers. He says, ‘Drawing is a meditation for me as I concentrate and get totally immersed in it. People around me always encouraged me and it motivates me when people say wow.’
His Art Style
His art style comprises of bold lines, semi-realistic caricatures, whimsical compositions with lots of flowers in the background. Thokchom’s work ranges from detailed fashion portraitures, fashion illustrations to graphic novel arts and 2D animations. One of the most interesting piece of work that he has done is his art for graphic novels like Indian War Comics and Guardians of Justice.
He is currently working on a series of fashion illustrations, inspired by the Manipuri traditional skirt Potloi. Thokchom plans to exhibit these works in the coming months. He loves fashion illustrations. (Fashion Illustrations are the drawings or sketches that an artist makes for a design or a fashion designer to express the ideas that could be for fashion magazines, editorial or stores).
People, places, Manipuri cultural ethnicity and urban fashion are what inspires him the most. He says about his art, ‘I focus on not just the garment but also the characters, the mood and background compositions. I’m trying to create a style that is something fresh, unique, traditional but contemporary. I hope that through my art I can show the world a glimpse of the rich culture and tradition that I belong to, where I come from.’
