Despite banning of corporal punishment in schools by the Union government, authorities of a noted English-medium school of Guwahati locked a group of students inside a dark room for several hours. The incident which has shocked residents took place at Little Flower School, Hatigaon on Tuesday, where a group of students were thrashed by a teacher for speaking Assamese within the school campus. As per information, school authorities also locked the students inside a dark classroom till late evening.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metropolitan) district M Angamuthu ordered a detailed probe regarding the issue. It may be mentioned here that Asom Sahitya Sabha (ASS) has already instructed authorities of all the English medium schools to make Assamese a compulsory subject in their respective schools.
