Post declaration of Sikkim as the first organic State of India, the State is gearing up to set up an exclusive research institution- the National Organic Farming Research Institute (NOFRI), for providing technological support to organic farming.
‘The institute will provide research and technological support to organic production in the country in general and the Northeastern region in particular, said Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh. He added that the institute will undertake basic strategic and adaptive research on efficient, economically viable and environmentally sustainable organic farming systems for improving productivity, efficiency and quality of produce.
Besides, it will also impart vocational and advanced training to stakeholders for promotion of organic farming in the country. Singh had announced this initiative during the 87th Annual General Meeting of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
