Not many people know about Pwilao Basumatary, a talented boxer from the Northeast. A simple girl from a family of farmers who dared to follow her passion, she is now one of the most talented boxers in the national team.
While growing up, she had to battle with hunger and poverty in a small village in Chirang, Assam. But she didn’t let adversities stop her and secured a place in the Sports Authority of India’s Special Area Games Centre in Kokrajhar. After that, she never looked back. In the 2011 World Boxing Championship in Turkey, she won a bronze medal.
When the 2012 ethnic violence broke out in Assam, she had to face a lot of hardship. Her family was among the lakhs of people who became homeless. But this tragedy failed to break her spirit and at the end of a long and arduous journey, she triumphed again. In the year 2015, she won the bronze at Asian Confederation Women Boxing Championship in Wulanchabu in China. She is one of the six boxers in the country to win a medal in China. Her success has brought a lot of hope to Bodoland.
She recently won the L’Oreal Women of Worth Awards 2016 in Sports. The aim of this award is to felicitate eight exceptional women who have made a difference to the lives of others, through their determination, conviction and drive in their respective fields. This is the fifth edition of the awards which took place in Mumbai. Celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Sunil Gavaskar, and Prasoon Joshi attended the event.
