Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has called on Home Minister Rajnath Singh seeking his intervention for solving the border issue between Assam and Meghalaya. ‘The border issue with neighbouring state Assam is increasing with every passing day, thus in order to tackle such issues we have requested Rajnath Singh to sanction additional India Reserve battalions (IRB),’ CM stated. The Chief Minister further urged the Home Minister to set up residential schools in border areas.
Sangma, accompanied by State Home Minister Roshan Warjri, submitted a memorandum to Rajnath on these issues. However, on the Assam-Meghalaya boundary differences, Sangma informed Singh that bilateral efforts have failed to bring about a mutually acceptable solution; the Meghalaya Assembly has passed a unanimous resolution urging the Centre to set up a commission to define the inter-state boundary between the two states.
In order to counter insurgency in Garo Hills region, the Home Minister was reminded of a proposal for up gradation of police establishment and infrastructure.
