Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday denied any possibility of joining hands with the All India United Democratic Front to form a third front to come to power in the State.
Addressing the press here on Saturday, the Chief Minister said, ‘Forming a third front is possible only in Badruddin Ajmal’s dreams. Congress will not join hands with Ajmal. We are not facing such bad days as to form a third front to come to power’.
Three days back, AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal had stated that to form the next government in Assam his party is trying to cobble up a third front with the help of Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s party – the alliance partners of BJP. The perfume baron who is confident of getting 24 to 40 seats in the recently concluded Assembly polls in the State also stated that Congress could also join in the third front if it wanted to. Denying such a possibility, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, ‘It is funny that AIUDF thinks Congress needs the help of Badruddin to form the government. He can rope in BJP to do that. We know he maintains a very good relationship with BJP’.
The Chief Minister also came down heavily on the BJP led NDA government for not releasing Rs. 1290 crore to the State as flood relief fund. ‘The Centre is not taking the issue of flood in Assam seriously. Had they taken it, we would have received the pending amount of Rs.1290 crore from the Modi-led government. Monsoon season has arrived and with it floods. We need to take up flood control measures but due to lack of funds, we are not being able to do much. If the Centre can invest Rs 3000 crores to clean up the Ganga River and release fund for drought affected states, why can’t they release at least the pending funds to the State to tackle flood?’.
Refuting allegations of non-submission of utilisation certificates of funds spent in flood control measures, Tarun Gogoi said, ‘If I have not submitted the utilisation certificates yet, why doesn’t the Water Resource Minister instruct me to do so? I have written to Uma Bharti asking her to release the fund, she should have ordered me to submit certificate of utilisation first’. Slamming the Union government for trying to disrupt the democratic set up in the country Tarun Gogoi said, ‘The BJP led NDA government is trying its level best to dissolve the democratically set up governments in the country. First they tried it with Arunachal Pradesh; then again they did it in Uttarakhand. But we, the Congress party will keep on fighting against them. He also stated that the Modi led government is yet to give its nod to procurement of sophisticated guns and drones for surveillance along the national parks of Assam to curb rhino poaching.
