Putting another feather on the tea industry of the State, the Halmari tea, one of the finest variants of Assam Tea has set a new record for the highest price fetched for Indian tea. Halmari tea was sold for Rs 501 at the auction held in Kolkata.
A total of 247.8kg CTC tea was sold at the auction by J. Thomas and Company, the largest tea auctioneer in the world.
It is also the first time an Indian tea variant is crossing the Rs. 500 mark. The previous auction record was Rs 441, set last year by Halmari itself.
The tea produced on the plush plains of this Upper Assam was the first among Assam varieties to find a place at the Harrods Top Tier Tea Gift Box.
The Halmari tea was earlier this year listed among the top nine gardens by Harrods, London’s most famous departmental store.
