In yet another case of domestic violence in Assam, a 35-year-old man has killed his wife and three daughters on Saturday in South Salmara of Dhubri district. The incident took place earlier on Saturday in Bhenakuchi village in South Salmara. It is learnt that one Rafikul Islam killed his wife Aimana Bibi, girl children Rafika Khatun, Rupa Khatun and Rabia Khatun by repeatedly attacking them with a sharp weapon. Rabia Khatun was only a year old.
Locals said that Rafikul Islam fled the scene immediately after committing the crime. At that moment his brother Safijul Islam and his father Moinul Ali was also present in the house. Police has detained both of them. ‘We have picked up the brother and the father for interrogation and it is on. The accused Rafikul Islam has fled and police is in search of him. The motive behind the triple murder has not been ascertained,’ said Superintendent of Police, Harekrishna Nath.
Crimes against women in Assam are highest in the country with a total of 19,139 cases registered in the year 2015. It is 123.4 percent, while the national average is 56.3 percent. Assam police records reveal that out of the total cases, at least 4,539 cases were of cruelty by husbands and in 106 cases, women were killed because of dowry related issues.
