Sanjive Narain Speaks
The Managing Director of Guwahati FC says, ‘It will be a fanfare both inside and outside the stadium. We will make Nehru Stadium a place to hang out with friends and family. If 30,000 people can fill up Indian Super League matches than why not Bordoloi Trophy? We will create the atmosphere.’
‘It will have coffee and fast food joints, popcorn, snacks and soft drink bars on all match days. We will also engage Bollywood and Assamese film industry artistes to perform during the breaks.’
Bordoloi Trophy – A Heritage
Bordoloi Trophy was held for the first time in the year 1952, and it was won by Railway Sports Club Pandu. Since then, it has been a craze and the face of football in Assam till the mid 80s. Later on, with television showcasing live matches including the international ones, the crowd never returned to the stadium like before.
Mohan Bagan AC has been the most successful team of Bordoloi Trophy, they have won the coveted title 7 times.
The prize money for Bordoloi Trophy this year will be Rs 20,00,000 which will lure big teams of the country to participate in the tournament.
The timings of the matches have been kept at 7 PM to lure in students and office goers alike.
Big teams from within the country like Shillong Lajong FC, East Bengal, Bengaluru FC, Sikkim United and Aizawl FC will be participating. Top teams will be coming from Nepal and Bangladesh to participate as well. The participation of such teams will show a better congregation of Indian players and their skills.
We hope that the tournament will be successful to bring back the lost glory of football in the state and take the standard of Indian football ahead.
