Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi on Monday raised the issue of the state reeling under severe floods in the Parliament. The MP alleged that apathy of the Centre was clearly visible in addressing the issue of flood fury in the state and the rest of Eastern India. The Kaliabor MP training his gun at the Modi led Centre alleged that Assam would witness the ‘Darkest Chapter’ in its history during the Narendra Modi regime. Putting aside the official figures, MP Gogoi put the death toll in the current wave of floods at 90, with 35 dead in Assam, 25 in Bihar and 30 in Uttarakhand. He further alleged that the Centre was also indifferent in assisting Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh in tackling floods.
It may be mentioned that Assam has been ravaged by a devastating flood which has affected nearly 17 lakh people in 21 districts so far. As per Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports, 31 people in Assam have died in the flood till Sunday. 3,300 villages have been affected so far. The authorities are running 463 relief camps and distribution centres, where almost 1.5 lakh people have taken shelter.
Farmers in Assam have faced heavy losses due to the floods as 1.5 lakh crop area is still submerged. Also, infrastructure of the state has been badly hit with 150 rural roads being badly damaged. 80 percent of Kaziranga National Park has been submerged because of the flood. In fact, this is the worst flood faced by Assam since 1988. Three rhinos, seven rhino calves and more than 18 deer have been killed in the deluge.
