Election bugle has gone off in Manipur as the State is all set for assembly elections, which will most probably be held early next year. To monitor the poll preparedness of the State, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) will be visiting Imphal today. The Election Commission (EC) team comprises of CEC Nasim Zaidi and fellow Election Commissioners A K Joti and O P Rawat.
Visit of Chief Election Commissioner
During their two day visit in Imphal, the Commission would review poll preparedness. ‘ The team would meet the state police, officers of the district administration and district magistrates. They will also meet representatives from different political parties’ said a source from the Election Commission.
The term of the 60 member Manipur Legislative Assembly comes to an end on March, 2017.
Interesting election on the cards
Interesting election is on the cards in Manipur as BJP has started making inroads in the state. In the past, the saffron party had no presence in Manipur. However, they debuted in the Manipur Assembly last year by winning two bypoll seats. In the recently held Imphal Municipal Council elections, BJP won 10 out of 27 seats.
Ruling party Congress on the other hand is facing dissent within the party. The Okram Ibobi Singh government is having a tough time in battling anti-incumbency in the State. Growing agitations regarding the Inner Line Permit is also increasing pressure upon the government. So, it is to be seen whether Singh can be third time lucky!
