A mob ransacked the official residence of the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) of southern Mizoram’s Lunglei town on Thursday and gheraoed the premises of the district court for hours, forcing police to arrest 30 people for unlawful conduct.
The mob surrounded the court premises and pelted stones smashing window panes of officials who were still inside. Lunglei Sub-Divisional Police Officer D Laldingngheta said two persons were injured when police personnel baton charged them to control the situation.
It is to be noted that the group of people from Zohnuai area in Lunglei had congregated in the court premises to see a man who was recently accused of murdering a man from that locality. It was a case of drunken brawl and the victim was trying to separate the two men. Things got out of hand after the mob came to know that a judge was holding a camp court inside the district jail, where the accused was lodged, to hear the case apprehending violence.
As of now, the mob is still gheraoing the court premises while the judges and court officials remain stranded inside.
