The injured elephant which was stuck in a muddy pit in Nagaon’s Chapanala has been finally rescued after eight days. The elephant has received several bullet injuries. Even though it was stuck in the pit for so long, forest department allegedly didn’t take necessary initiative to get it out of the mess. Locals have alleged that forest department went ahead with the operation only after State Forest Minister Promila Rani Brahma visited the site on Friday.
A forest official who was part of the rescue team told mediapersons, ‘ The elephant was in lot of pain because it was stuck in the pit. It has been shot from close range. Most probably, its leg has been broken and so it couldn’t get up on its own. We will be taking it to Kaziranga for treatment. However, chances of its survival are very slim. We are investigating whether it was shot by poachers or is the work of any local.’
