The BJP party in Manipur may soon have Mary Kom as their star campaigner for the assembly elections in the State next year. Assam Finance, Health and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance, a BJP-led umbrella organization of political parties said, ‘We are in talks with her though nothing has been finalized yet’.
Even if the champion boxer does not join the party, one of her brothers is likely to get a BJP ticket. Himanta Biswa Sarma met Mary Kom in Imphal on October 16. In last six months alone, several veteran Congress leaders have joined BJP. According to sources, the party also reached out to iconic activist Irom Sharmila, who has decided to join electoral politics.
Mary Kom, also known as Magnificent Mary, is a five-time World Amateur Boxing Champion. She is also the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics competing in the flyweight (51 kg) category and winning the bronze medal. She was nominated as the member of Rajya Sabha on April 26, 2016.
