Assam has the most wide-ranging networks of higher educational institutions in the whole of the North-Eastern region of India. The presence of institutions like the National Institute of Technology, Silchar; Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati; and North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat; helps to add stature to the higher education system of Assam. But what Assam lacks is a true blue world-class university.
However all that is about ot change. A world-class skill development university will be set up in Assam with technical expertise and assistance from the Singapore government.
A True World Class University
The proposed university will be set up as a part of memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Assam Government and Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education Education Services (ITEES), on collaboration in technical and vocational education and training. And once it is completed, the skill development university will impart skill development training on a par with the best institutes in the country and elsewhere.
‘The MoU was signed in Delhi during Singapore premier Lee Hsien Loong’s visit to India in the first half of October. Singapore will give technical aid and provide the sets of skills to be taught. The proposed university will not only cater to the needs of Assam or other Northeastern states but can also be developed as a university for the Southeast Asian countries’, BJP National Secretary Ram Madhav told the media.
Not only that, the institute will help a long way in bridging the gap between employment opportunities and skilled manpower in the state. It is to be noted that the state currently has over 23 lakhs unemployed youths.
Stress on skill development and entrepreneurship
The BJP Governments in Dispur and Delhi have made their intentions clear on solving the unemployment scenario by building a pool of skilled manpower. Not only that the Assam Government is also setting up skill-development centres in all districts of the state so that the youth can hone their skills and start their own ventures or get absorbed in companies.
The State Government will also provide assistance to the students in terms of placement by approaching various companies. Recently Chandra Mohan Patowary was given charge of the Skill Development Ministry. And from the looks of it the move seems to be paying huge dividends.
