The bypolls held recently in four Lok Sabha and eight Assembly seats across India was supposed to be the acid test for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following their demonetization move. Their performance in the bypoll would indicate people’s support for the new economic policy undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the verdict in Assam shows that people here are still supporting the ruling party.
Mansing Rongpi of the BJP won the Baithalangso legislative assembly by-elections defeating his nearest rival Rupansing Ranhang of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 16, 600 votes. Mansing got 72, 160 votes while the Congress candidate bagged 55, 560 votes.
BJP candidate Pradan Barua registered a huge victory in the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency by-polls. Barua defeated his nearest rival Dr Hemhari Prasanna Pegu of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 2,16,262 votes. Over 66 percent polling was reported at Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat.
Interestingly, Pradan Baruah who had defected to BJP from Congress last year was elected as the Dhemaji MLA earlier this year. However, following his victory in the bypoll, the Dhemaji seat get vacated and bypoll will be held there again after few months.
