December 11 2016, mark that date as it will be go down in history as the day soccer crazy fans in Northeast India will have a date with destiny by hosting ‘The God of Football’ Diego Armando Maradona. And if that didn’t make you go nuts, here is some more information. Maradona is scheduled to play an exhibition match with an under-16 team on December12.
This has been confirmed by the Nagaland’s State Department of YouthResources and Sports. The detailed programme about Maradona’s visit would be worked out in the coming days.
Purpose of visit
The purpose for inviting the football legend is to motivate young players in Nagaland. He will be accorded a ‘State Guest’ status and Chief Minister TR Zeliang will also host a dinner for the legend.
‘Maradona’s visit to the state will do a world of good to the Naga youth, who will be inspired to play the beautiful game in the right earnest. He will meet young footballers during his stay. Football lovers in the state will get a golden opportunity to see the legend on home turf and in person.’, an official said.
And the timing couldn’t have been more right. With the Indian Super League (ISL) at its business end, Maradona can witness the tournament in all its glory. Also India’s footballing credentials is largely unknown in other countries. This is the chance to show one of the all time greats, the level of talent plying their trade in the country.
It is still not confirmed how many days the soccer legend will spend in Nagaland. Maradona will also visit the historical Naga village of Khonoma, some 15km from here. The Nagaland Northeast for Child Rights, an NGO, is helping the state government to arrange the soccer icon’s visit to the state.
