Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday laid foundation stones for an electrification project between Raninagar (Jalpaiguri) and Guwahati section and projects related to doubling of rail track between New Bongaigaon and Kamakhya Junction via Goalpara and doubling of Digaru- Hojai Section. He also announced an Rs 5000 crore joint venture with the Assam government. Besides, he also announced a slew of steps for rapid and wide scale development of rail connectivity in the Northeastern region.
‘Construction of the elevated tracks connecting Kamakhya and New Guwahati would decongest city roads, free up railway land and enable railways to develop Guwahati station as a commercial hub,’ Prabhu said adding that the new projects would keep provisions for connectivity with the proposed metro.
‘The DPR for the project is to be readied within the next 15 days. We will expedite clearance from the Railway Ministry side and once formal approval from the State government and local bodies is secured, we hope to start work in a few months,’ he added.
He said similar JVs have been formed with the State governments with regard to projects in places like Bhubaneswar and Gandhinagar. He added that the new passenger terminal at New Guwahati will include commercial establishments like shopping malls and will be of a standard even better than that of airport terminals.
While thanking the Railway Minister for his initiatives in development of rail network in the region, Sonowal emphasized on speedy completion of all railway projects in the state. He also requested the Railway Minister to take up construction of railway line so that every district headquarters of the state is connected with railway line. The Chief Minister also requested Shri Prabhu to initiate steps involving railways for skill development of the youth of the region.
