In a massive scam which has recently come to light, Rs 2250 crore was siphoned off in the Social Welfare Department in the name of feeding of 9 lakh ghost children who doesn’t exist. The massive financial scam came to light after Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered streamlining of the activities of the department.
Reacting on ‘expose’, Sonowal said, ‘Over Rs 150 crore have been siphoned off every year for last 15 years. The government will take up drastic actions to reform the Social Welfare Department. Those found guilty of siphoning off humongous sums of fund meant for the nutrition of poor children of the State will not escape punishment.’
The money was withdrawn in the name of almost 10 lakh ghost children, who did not exist but were accounted for delivery of nutrition. The total figure of children was shown to be 44 lakh then but after scrutiny on the ground, the number now stands reduced to 35 lakh. Similarly, officials have identified 390 fake Anganwadi centers through which the money was siphoned off.
