At least two persons were killed and six others injured when the engine and two coaches of 13248 Up Rajendra Nagar-Guwahati Capital Express derailed at Samuktala Road Station under Alipurduar division of Northeast Frontier Railway in Alipurduar district of West Bengal. The incident happened at around 9:15 pm on Tuesday.
The injured have been identified as Indrajit Mandal (25), Parikshit Mandal (40), Pritam Mandal (16), Rupa Mandal (34), Shah Jamal Sheikh (35) and Surender Prasad (38). A statement released by the railways said, ‘The deceased are yet to be identified. The injured were given treatment by the railway doctors who reached the site after the incident. Ex gratia payment of Rs 5000 each has been made to the injured.’
According to the statement issued by the Northeast Frontier Railway, the cause of derailment was overshooting of red signal by the driver of the train. However, a thorough probe will reveal the actual cause of the derailment. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has ordered a probe into the accident.
The 150 stranded passengers of the train were taken back to Alipurduar on the Khamakya-Alipurduar Junction Intercity Express.
