Why did you choose modelling and what challenges did you have to face?
Modelling is something that I really wanted to do ever since I was a kid. I was always in love with the camera. If you see my first photos, even though no one taught me how to model, I would just pose instinctively. So, modelling is something that I am very passionate about.
One problem that I face is that even though I am an Indian, I don’t have typical Indian features. Usually they are like, ‘Indian ho?’ People tend to think that I am Malayasian or from some other Asian country. So, most of the time, I tend to go for auditions where they are looking for international or oriental features.
What is it about modelling that challenges you the most?
Modelling is not an easy job, people think it’s just about flaunting a pretty face. But it’s not that at all. You have to be there, be present and there is a lot of responsibility on your head. You have to give your 100 percent otherwise it’s no use. You have to understand the camera well, the angles, your profiles, what looks better, etc. Plus there is more. You have to live up to the expectations and requirements of the photographer and the client. So it’s a lot of work and not just showing your face.
What are your thoughts on the Northeast modelling scenario?
I don’t know very much about that because I have been raised in Mumbai. But I have heard that it’s quite slow as compared to places like Mumbai, Delhi etc. I feel like talented girls from the Northeast should come out more. This way people will discover them and approach them for projects and assignments. There is a lot of talent out there, not just modelling but also in music, singing etc.
Any advice for aspiring youth who want to pursue modelling professionally
I would just like to tell the girls, especially the teenagers, that it is a big responsibility. If it is a dream, then you should think hard about whether you are serious about the field and then go further. Because at that age, it’s crazy, you are excited and don’t know what to do. You need to think and listen to the right people. People with money may come and say like, ‘Oh, I will make your career. I have contacts and I will give you a lot of jobs.’ But you need to do your research. Get to know the right people, and connect to them on social media like Facebook, Instagram etc. Also, don’t feel self-conscious about how you look because you have certain type of features, be proud of who you are.
One thing that you love to eat but cannot
There is nothing like that. Although I look skinny, I eat everything. It’s not like I am on a diet. I try and eat healthy but I also love to eat junk food like Dosa, Chinese etc, which I eat occasionally.
