A Special Judge court on Saturday sent former APSC chairman Rakesh Paul to 5 day police custody in connection with a cash-for-job scam case registered with the Dispur police station.
According to the complaint filed by Anup Nath, Pal had sought Rs 15 lakh for clearing his name for the post of Agricultural Development Officer in the agriculture department. Subsequent to this, Paul was handed over Rs 3 lakh (the remaining to be handed after appointment). However, Paul refrained from calling Nath for the selection procedure and aftermath refused to return the money.
Paul, a little-known lawyer who was appointed by the Congress government of Tarun Gogoi in 2008 as APSC member, was elevated as chairman in 2013. There were several allegations of anomalies in selection of candidates for government posts through the APSC since he became its chairman, with cases being filed against him and the commission.
