UFO Conspiracy Theorists in India will be licking their lips on hearing this. A 1968 CIA report detailed six UFO sightings over India, Bhutan and Nepal. The document, which is a part of 930,000 declassified documents by the CIA, places the sightings over South Ladakh, North Sikkim, Nepal and Bhutan respectively.
UFO Sighting over Sikkim
On the night of 19th February, 1968, a bright and fast-moving object was spotted over north Sikkim. The object moved over the areas of Lachung, Lachen, Thangu, Muguthang and Cholamu in Sikkim, and was bright enough to light these areas at night. Shortly after it was spotted in Cholamu, a ‘thunder sound’ was heard.
Sighting in Bhutan
Bhutan didn’t had to wait long for their first extra-terrestrial encounter. Shortly after it was spotted in Sikkim, on the night of 21st February, 1968, a UFO was spotted over Bhutan. The ‘bluish coloured object’ was spotted over Bhutan’s capital Thimpu, and reportedly moved at ‘high speed without any noise’. The report also mentioned that the object emitted enough light to ‘brighten the area’.
Findings of the reports
These reports offer no insights into what the CIA investigators made of the sightings. The Scientific Advisory Panel formed by the CIA worked with the Air Technical Intelligence Centre to analyse evidence of UFO sightings and to assess the ‘potential dangers to national security’. After a round of meetings in January 1953, the panel concluded the evidence on UFOs ‘shows no evidence that these phenomena constitute a direct physical threat to national security’. Despite this, the CIA continued tracking UFO sightings.
