It is often alleged that the Northeast India doesn’t find a place in the Bollywood landscape. Despite the unique history and unmatched natural beauty of the region, we rarely find a big star vehicle being shot here. There have been exceptions like Mani Ratnam’s ‘Dil Se’ starring Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala which dealt with the insurgency issue in the region but the execution was shoddy to say the least. Same thing can be said about Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Rock On 2’ which came out last year and was shot in Meghalaya.
Northeast connect of Rangoon
So, in this scenario, lot is being expected from Vishal Bhardwaj’s magnum opus ‘Rangoon’ set during World War II. This movie starring Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut has been shot extensively in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The trailer of the movie was released with much fanfare today and it gives us glimpses of scenes shot at Murkongselek, a village in Dhemaji and near Siang river in Arunachal Pradesh. The film has been shot in Pasighat and Kowang village also and locals there even served as extras in the role of Japanese soldiers.
Another Northeast connect the movie has got is Lin Laishram, the Manipur beauty who has a pivotal role in the movie. She had earlier worked with Priyanka Chopra in ‘Mary Kom’.
We are hoping that this epic tale of love and deceit in the backdrop of war will provide a better representation of Northeast than what we have seen so far. ‘Rangoon’ hits the theatres on February 24.
