There seems to be a sudden increase in the incidents of crime against women from Northeast India across the country. After a woman from Meghalaya was sexually assaulted on a train in Kerala yesterday, in another shocking incident last night, a girl from Nagaland was raped in the Hauz Khas village area of Delhi.
The 24 year old woman was alone and walking home when the incident occurred. The incident took place between midnight and 2 am. She had gone to the party with her friends and cousins, said a senior police officer.
How the incident took place?
The woman has told the police that around 11:30 pm she was offered a ride by a man who apparently told her that his car was parked near the adjoining Deer Park.
The man then led her to an isolated stretch in the adjoining park area and allegedly raped her. The woman managed to escape and went to the police.
‘She was offered a lift home by the accused, who said his vehicle was parked at some distance,’ Deputy Commissioner of Police Chinmoy said. The police are hunting for the alleged rapist with help from local people and electronic surveillance.
‘Efforts are being made to ascertain the culprit’s identity,’ said the police officer. ‘We have gathered vital clues in preliminary investigation and the accused will be caught soon. We are in touch with the woman, and she is being counselled to help her recover from the trauma,’ the officer added.
Police teams are examining the CCTV footage from various streets of Hauz Khas village to identify the accused man. Hauz Khas village is popular for its designer wear shops and an array of restaurants and pubs.
