The political crisis in Nagaland going on since the last few weeks is now set to end with the resignation of Chief Minister T R Zeliang. Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu, the President of the ruling party in the State, Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) is all set to become the Chief Minister after he was elected as the new legislature party leader on Monday. Even though former Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio was in the reckoning for the post as well, ultimately Liezietsu had the last laugh. Dr. Shurhozelie would now have to seek re-election within six months. He is most likely to contest from his old constituency (10 Northern Angami-I A/C) which is currently being held by his son, Khriehu Liezietsu.
Expectation and concerns
The people of Nagaland wanted the resignation of Zeliang and they are happy that it has happened finally. Regarding the appointment of Liezietsu, a source said, ‘ We hope the condition of the State will improve now. People have lot of expectation from the new Chief Minister. We were not happy with Zeliang as he was someone who took decisions on the behest of the BJP government. Liezietsu will be someone who will be able to hold his own in front of the Central government in Delhi.’
However, there are also people who are concerned about this appointment. On condition of anonymity, a person who hails from Northern Angami from where Liezietsu was elected twice said, ‘ I won’t rate him very highly as an administrator. During his two terms as MLA, he didn’t do anything substantial for our constituency though he was also the Urban Development Minister at that time. On the contrary, his son Khrieu Liezietsu, who was elected from our constituency in the last assembly election, performed relatively better.’
