A model rural tourism project has been undertaken by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council at Tumpreng in West Karbi Anglong district. Located 20 km from Hojai town, the Kapili river flows through Tumpreng.
The project, which includes a 4-hectare flower garden in memory of social worker Singh Ranghang, a children’s park, a medicinal plant garden, swimming pool, an auditorium-cum-conference hall, and more, is a joint effort of the forest, fisheries and tourism departments. Once the work is complete, the council will manage it with the cooperation of local youth and organisations.
The council has already completed work on the garden, swimming pool, a forest inspection bungalow and infrastructure for watersport. The garden which has around 220 different varieties of flowers has been getting a lot of positive feedback from the visitors The council plans to finish the remaining work in this financial year.
As a result of improvement in the law-and-order situation, more tourists and travellers, as compared to before, are exploring West Karbi Anglong but there is still a long way to go. Locals feel that bad roads are a main concern, if the State government can help improve the condition of roads then maybe more travellers from around the country and the world will get an opportunity to see what makes West Karbi Anglong so special.
