Hundreds of people have been evacuated to safer places in Imphal as parts of Manipur valley continued to reel under flood-like situation after heavy rainfall over the past two days. After all time record breaking rainfall on Thursday, the state continued to receive heavy rainfall on Saturday.
Incessant Rainfall since Friday
Incessant rainfall lashed across the state inundating several areas in valley areas, particularly the capital city. The rainfall during Friday night continued till Saturday with hailstones in the evening.
Officials of Imphal West district administration said that flood-like situation affected 1599 families at Lamphel area of the district and they have been shifted to temporary shelters. Many areas and localities were water-logged and the water level increased owing to moderate downpour of the day, it was reported.
As directed by an emergency cabinet meeting of the N Biren government, Imphal West DC C Arthur Worchuiyo submitted a preliminary assessment of affected households under his district late yesterday evening.
Relief camps being set up
Three relief camps were opened at the safer places nearby the flood affected localities. The DC said that relief items in the form of rice, dal, salt and mustard oil were distributed to each affected families through local club members under the supervision of the SDO/SDC concerned today.
Heavy rain with thunderstorm and hailstones was reported from hills districts of the state in the last three days, Tamenglong being the most affected area.
