Sending a clarion call, women folk from all walks of life cutting across community lines today joined hands to mount pressure on the BJP-led government to ensure justice in the April 14 gangrape case.
A convention was held today in connection with the gangrape at the Kuki Inn, Imphal. It was attended by different women organisations under the initiative of Kuki Women Union, (KWU) Sadar Hills and Kuki Women Union Manipur (KWUM).
Keikhu Muslim Women Welfare Society (MWWS), All Manipur Muslim Women Development Organization (AMMWSO), Rongmei Luh Phuam (RLP), Khwairamband Keithel Lambi Matai Potpham Phamba Lup, Nari Kalyan Samiti, Waiton Makha Leikai Meira Paibi, Villages Women Co-operating Committee Imphal West, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Association Thoubal, Kangleipak Women Welfare Association, Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights, Women Action for Development etc. are some of the groups that attended the convention.
The gathering strongly condemning the April 14 gangrape deliberated on the issues particularly the protection and justice for the ‘rape survivors’.
Many speakers resented the failure of the authority to give justice to rape victims in the state. After threadbare discussion, the gathering formed a core committee to spearhead the movement for justice. The gathering also unanimously agreed to organise a mass rally in Imphal to condemn the gangrape and demand justice at the earliest.
In the meantime, it has been established that both the victims are minors. The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Imphal East today recorded statement of one of the two victims, who was due to appear before the court. It has also been established that six of the seven accused who were directly involved in the gangrape, have been sent to juvenile home with the said accused having submitted their age proof certificates.
