The first time, I met Magician Torque (aka Pritam) was at Shanghai Salsa where he came to each table and showed his card tricks and other cool tricks with rubber bands and match sticks. Now, all the guests (myself included) started off a little sceptical (blame it on age, if only we could all believe in a little magic like we did when we were kids) but as the night went, you could hear the laughter, surprised gasps and applause. His flawless tricks made us all believers even if it is for the span of only one night.
The First Spark
An under-graduate student from IIT Guwahati studying Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Pritam’s love for magic started when he was very little. ‘When I was young, I was very self-conscious and always kept to myself. My world felt empty until one day I saw a man take a coin and make it vanish right before my eyes. For many, this was just a trick or an illusion, but for me, it became my escape and my awakening. Shapes and colours took new meaning as I felt the seed of potential growing within. A flame was ignited in my heart and after that magic became my life.’
Mastering The Tricks
He started learning magic from the internet in the beginning and then switched to picking up tricks from books. ‘I read a lot of books related to magic which gave me a lot of knowledge about the Art of Magic.’
It wasn’t always easy. ‘At first when I started learning basic moves, it took a lot of effort to perfect the moves. But once you know the basic of all the moves, things starts to get simpler and simpler.’ He practices for hours but he feels that the best practice is performing in front of an audience. ‘I master my tricks when I show it to people because magic is a performing art and is meant to be performed live, so the more I perform live, the better I get.’
As for his favorite trick, he says that there is none. ‘I don’t have a favourite trick as such. I just love to see how people react to magic because I think that magic has never been about me. Magic is about the people, about emotions, creating an image, a snapshot, a memory, something we will all remember for years to come.’
Modern day magicians who he feels are really skilled are Justin Miller, Shin Lim, Daniel Madison, and Geogery Wilson.
The Balancing Act
If his passion takes up so much of his time, when does he get time to study? That is what most of us would ponder but Pritam has it all figured out. ‘I will tell you the secret. I am smart! I am not the topper in my class, I am just a normal average student but I know how to manage my time perfectly. Also, I have friends who help me a lot. I am thankful for having friends who support me.’
He is also planning to use his engineering know-how to come up with better magic tricks. ‘I think adding technology to magic will take magic to a whole new level.’
He has performed at Alcheringa (IIT Guwahati), and Pyrokinesis (Assam Engineering College). He also performs in bars, pubs, and restaurants. ‘Just about any place you could probably imagine.’ He is also working on a TV series about street magic.
Appreciation From the Crowd
He also has many fans who appreciate his skills.
Illusionist Mon, Street Magician from Assam had told him, ‘The way you handle the deck of cards is too clean.’
Even SIRO A, America’s Got Talent Semi-finalist commented, ‘Wow, professional.’
Pritam shares that his parents are his most enthusiastic supporters. ‘The best complements I have received are from my mom and dad because without them and without their support, I am nothing.’
He hopes to continue his magical journey for as long as he lives. ‘I will try to keep amazing people and show them something that is truly unexplainable. I want to spread joy and ignite the wonder that lives within all of us.’
