As Darjeeling bleeds with the demands of Gorkhaland, its effect is slowly being seen in Assam as well. Gorkhas from Assam are now also planning to intervene in the matter. A five member team of Nikhil Asom Gorkha Sanmilan will soon visit Darjeeling to take stock of the situation. Meanwhile, Tezpur MP R P Sharma, who hails from the Gorkha community has launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and warned her not force the Gorkhas to take up arms.
Addressing Banerjee, Sarma said, ‘ if you have power, then arrest 1.30 crore Gorkhas living in this country. But oppression on innocent masses woin’t be tolerated. Gorkhas have the right to speak and study their mother tongue Nepali. So, they would never accept Bengali language which has been imposed upon them by the West Bengal government.’
He further added, ‘ If oppression on the Gorkhas is not stopped then the consequences will be devastating. Mamata Banerjee shouldn’t force the Gorkhas in taking up arms. The demand for Gorkhaland is not wrong and West Bengal government will have to give in today or tomorrow.’
He said that on behalf of 26 lakh Gorkhas living in Assam, a request will be made to President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring the Gorkhaland bill in the next Assembly session.
