The first page of Northeast India was created on Facebook in 2008. It was by Jim AnkanDeka, an Assamese musician and photographer and his team’s love for Northeast that led to the creation of this popular page on Facebook as well as the informative site – www.oknortheast.com. With regular updates on the Northeastern corner of India, both the site and the Facebook page also focuses on travel destinations and Northeastern personalities.
Jim left Bangalore in 2015 and after 9 years of free service through the page, he along with Debjani Hazarika, a graphic & animation artist, started the company called OK! North East in Guwahati in January 2017. The company still gives out free information, but, this time, specifically to the travellers traveling from abroad as well as bikers and backpackers from India. The company has opened guesthouses, homestays and campsites at various places, giving out budget stay options to travellers along with giving them an opportunity to get a glimpse of the Northeastern culture.
The company also started a campaign to help out villagers in the interior places of the Northeast. As most of the travellers prefer to visit not very touristy or famous but mostly unkown and significant places, sometimes it becomes difficult for them to get a hotel or other accommodation. The team at OK! North East has been travelling to various interior places where there is opportunity for tourism and creating awareness regarding giving out their houses or a single rooms as HomeStay accomodations. This is mainly to help out the women in the rural or semi-urban areas as most of them don’t have any source of regular income.
The blog by OK! North East has over 400 articles on different subjects on the Northeast. Many travellers from different parts of the world have also been sharing their amazing stories through the blog. Through OK! North East, people of the Northeast too get a chance to meet the amazing travellers like Rico Reißmann, who had walked all the way from Germany to India, Willem Betts, a 7.2 ft tall photographer from Canada or Carlos from Spain who is a surfer and on a mission to India in search of spirituality and have been undergoing rigorous meditation practices.
OK! North East now also supports Everything Outdoor, an adventure storehouse; By The Way, a hang out zone for travellers in Guwahati; and Jenie’s Mascara, a fashion house in Guwahati mainly catering to foreign travellers.
