It is not every day that we come across someone with so much drive and dedication who tirelessly works for a cause that one believes in. But Shri Mahbubul Hoque is one such man who has proved that with optimism and an indefatigable spirit really anything is achievable. He has set examples for youth to follow.
Early life of Mahbubul Haque
Born in an impoverished background in a remote village called Purbogool under Karimganj district and Patharkandi sub-division on December 1, 1973, he struggled throughout his childhood and faced numerous hardships to reach the stage where he is today. His life is an inspiration to all. Having lost his parents at early stages of his life, he and his siblings had to survive facing the adversities of life. Despite all difficulties, he completed his matriculation from Karimganj with high marks and his 12thboards with star marks from G.C College, Silchar. Then he joined Aligarh Muslim University where he completed B.Sc (Hons) with distinction and then secured first class second rank in his Masters in Computer Application. With such glorious results he could have easily gone on to work for any MNCs, however, he decided to return and do something for the people here. He had a vision and thus tirelessly set working on fulfilling it. He began materializing his envision by setting up Central IT College in the year 2001 with just one computer and four students in a rented room. Gradually, with the success of Central IT College he started to galvanize the education sector and streamlined his institutions under one umbrella and started expanding educational activities in both Assam and Meghalaya. He established Education Research and Development Foundation in the year 2005 under his Chairmanship and began his educational entrepreneurial activities under the foundation.
Mahbubul Hoque went on to establish premier educational facilities under the ERD Foundation. He set up University of Science and Technology in the year 2012 and it is the first State private university on science & technology in the entire Northeast of India. The University, only in its 5th year running has completed its 2nd Convocation where a total of 583 successful students received their degrees. The University also has recently fulfilled the UGC Compliance. The ERD Foundation also has Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST), established in 2009, Central Public School situated in Patharkandi and Badarpur, a women college by the name of Khairun Nessa Begam Women’s College set up in the year 2015 and many other educational institutions in the region under its establishment.
Achievements of Mahbubul Haque
Acknowledging his contribution in the entire Northeast region for bringing about a social revolution by educating the poor, backward class people and specifically children from rural areas, he was bestowed with the Moulana Abul Kalam Azad Memorial Award on April 2, 2017 by the Barak Education Society at Silchar Gandhi Bhawan. He was also felicitated this year at the Sylheti Sanmilan for his work on education and for the greater cause of society. Mr Hoque was also part of the Centenary Celebration of Assam Sahitya Sabha held at Sibsagar on the 8th of February, 2017 where he was invited to inaugurate the Book Fair.
Recognizing his surpassing activity in promoting education excellence, he was also conferred the Aligarh Movement Award in 2015. In 2014 he received Best Edupreneur Award given by ‘Maeeshat’ India’s 1st Magazine Focusing on Minorities Business & Economy. The same year he was also conferred the Educlusion Award at Re-engineering India Summit – 2014 held at Singapore by Prof. Thomas L Magnanti, President of Singapore University of Technology & Design on the occasion of Engineers’ Day. Mahbubul Hoque has also been awarded with the prestigious ‘Edupreneur Award’ by Engineering Watch from Dr. Shashi Tharoor, the then Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development at the Engineers’ Conclave in 2013, selected by a jury of Vice Chancellors of 5 Technical Universities of India & other high level officials including officials from Ministry of Communications & IT and Member of Parliament, Govt. of India.
Contributions of Mahbubul Haque
Mahbubul Hoque has truly been a motivational figure for showing everybody how to hold onto one’s dreams unwaveringly in spite of all hardship. His optimism and his wisdom continually invigorate people and his vehement humanitarian work is inspirational. That he has achieved so much in so little time stands testament of his passionate effort and hard work. But being a man with a bigger vision, his dreams are not complete yet. He has several projects in the pipeline that will undoubtedly bring in a surge of development in the Northeast region when fulfilled. He is currently working on developing a Women’s B.ED College by 2018, Science Park & Museum in Karimganj by 2018, a 3000 capacity Auditorium also in Karimganj by 2018, a College of Architecture and a Pharmacy College at Techno City Campus, 9th Mile by 2019, a Nursing College in Karimganj also by 2019 and a Women University and one satellite TV channel in the name of Gyan Darshan by 2025. Another of his grand dream project is creation of a Medical College & Super specialty Hospital by 2020. The ground for the said project has already been finalized and soon Northeast will have an up-to-date specialty hospital where seats will be subsidized for the poor.
As the chairman of ERDF and Chancellor of USTM, Mahbubul Hoque has conceptualized flagship events like the North East Graduate Congress, North East College Principals Conclave, North East Teachers Congress, ERDF Talent Fest, North East Law Graduates Conclave and North East Junior College Principals Meet and also facilitated Government of India’s NSS festival and organizing more than 20 seminars, workshops, conferences every year. Mr Hoque also actively takes part in organizing events such as opening public libraries, starting coaching programs, quiz competition and several such educational initiatives. His foundation also offers ERDF Excellence Award to persons who have contributed immensely for the cause of societal development. Scholarship and aid for poor meritorious students are also provided. This is a cause especially dear to his heart as he understands the hardships faced by the poor of the community; so he persistently steps in to help them in whichever ways possible.
With such accomplishments, Mahbubul Hoque is really a person to reckon with. It is his single-minded devotion to his goal that has led him to this success. Concluding, the words of the great APJ Abdul Kalam rings true in case of Mahbubul Hoque –‘Excellence is a continuous process, not an accident.’ In the coming years, we will definitely see him continue to tread on more pioneering paths.
