National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday has filed a charge-sheet against ULFA (I) Chairman Dr. Abhijit Asom and Commander-in-Chief Paresh Baruah along with two other members. Reportedly, the charge-sheet was filed before a special NIA Court in Guwahati.
It maybe stated that the Agency has also prepared a ‘foolproof’ case for the extradition of Mukul Hazarika, a UK-based doctor believed to be Abhijit Asom, Chairman of the ULFA-I and a request for extradition will be forwarded to the British High Commission.
The rise of Abhijit Asom
Asom had been working as the acting chairman of the United Liberation Front of Assam since Arabinda Rajkhowa’s decision to held talks with the government of India, and was later designated as the chairperson of the organization on August 8 2012, following the expulsion of Rajkhowa from all the assigned ranks of the ULFA by the organization due to his failure in returning to the outlawed group. Before being instated as the acting chairperson of the ULFA, his identity was known only to Anup Chetia, Arabinda Rajkhowa, and Paresh Baruah. And, his candidature for the role of the acting chairperson of the organization left the government of India, the Indian Army, and the news media in a state of bewilderment.
